Where Nigeria files stall

Mistakes that hold up a Nigeria legalization

These are the details we check before anything goes to the Consular Section.

★ Exporters

Certificate of free sale only state-certified

A certificate of free sale needs the state certification and the U.S. Department of State authentication. One without the other won't be legalized.

✕ Letter

No letterhead request listing the products

Commercial submissions need a request letter on company letterhead that lists every product. A generic cover note isn't enough.

✕ Payment

Paying by check or card

The embassy accepts money orders only, payable to the Embassy of Nigeria. Any other payment sends the file back.

✕ Return

An uncertified return envelope

Documents come back only in a certified, prepaid envelope from USPS, UPS or FedEx, so a plain stamped envelope delays your file.

Certified Nigeria Translation

Some Nigeria authorities require documents to be translated into English before they can be accepted. We provide Certified Nigeria Translations that are fully embassy-approved, ensuring your documents meet Nigeria legal standards. Translations are accurate, professional, and accepted by government offices, schools, and businesses in the Nigeria.

  • This service is amazing! I wish I had known about it sooner. I had a document to be used abroad that needed to be notarized AND needed an apostille. It’s not so hard to find a notary but for anything more complicated, Aziz can get it done with a minimum of effort on the client’s part. He picked up the document, handled the legalizations process and returned the document to me. And in less than 24 hours! The consulate, which was my only other option had a ridiculous wait time to even get an appointment,  not to mention they were going to charge me three times what Aziz did. His rates are reasonable and he is super-professional and efficient! He saved me so much time and navigated the whole process seamlessly for me.  I highly recommend him and will no doubt be calling on him again in the future.

  • I was impressed with this company from start to finish, and I will definitely go to them again when I need a notary.First, it was super easy to set up the three appointments that I needed; the receptionist was able to confirm the appointments while I was on the phone with her.  Second, the notary showed up right on time for all appointments, even in one city location during rush hour and where finding street parking was challenging.  Even when I needed to change the location of one appointment at the last minute (from a Starbucks that wasn't open yet to a nearby restaurant), it was easy to reach the notary himself and work out the change with him.  Third, the two notaries I dealt with were both professional in appearance and manner.  Finally, company can cover DC, MD, and VA where I do business, and their price is reasonable.I'm very grateful that the paperwork went smoothly and was done properly.  I'm a new fan of DC Mobile Notary.

  • Aziz of DC MOBILE Notary was incredibly patient, knowledgeable, friendly, and reliable with regard to services we needed to authenticate educational documents for use abroad.  I will no hesitate to utilize his services again. In today's world of everything automated and voice bots, Aziz was a breath of fresh air, answers calls and emails without delays and works on finding solutions for his clients. Thanks Aziz.

What Is Nigeria Embassy Legalization (Attestation)?

Nigeria is not part of the Hague Apostille Convention, so U.S. documents need consular legalization. Each document is authenticated by the Secretary of State and the U.S. Department of State, then legalized by the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, DC. We prepare the embassy letter, copies and money order for you.

Answers

Nigeria legalization, answered

Does Nigeria accept a U.S. apostille?

No. Nigeria isn't a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. U.S. documents are authenticated by the Secretary of State and the U.S. Department of State, then legalized by the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, DC.

How long does the Embassy of Nigeria take?

The embassy asks you to allow 7 working days for processing. The U.S. authentication steps come before that, and we can expedite the steps we control.

What does the Embassy of Nigeria charge for commercial documents?

The embassy lists $100 per product or document plus a $50 processing fee, paid by money order. We confirm the current fees for your documents in your quote.

Can you legalize a certificate of free sale for export to Nigeria?

Yes. We get it certified by the state and authenticated by the U.S. Department of State, prepare the letterhead request listing your products, and submit it to the embassy.

Can you legalize personal documents for Nigeria?

Yes. Birth and marriage certificates, diplomas, transcripts, FBI background checks and powers of attorney go through the same chain. Documents in English don't need a translation.

Requirements checked against the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, DC and the HCCH Apostille Convention status table, November 2026.
