The Kenya legalization chain

Four steps to a Kenya-ready document

Kenya does not accept apostilles from the United States. The Embassy of Kenya only legalizes a U.S. document after it has been authenticated by the U.S. Department of State, so every document follows the same chain, whether it's a diploma, a power of attorney or a certificate of incorporation.

Most Kenya rejections come down to a few avoidable details. We check each one before your document goes to the embassy.

★ Easy to miss

Skipping the U.S. Department of State

A Secretary of State certificate on its own isn't enough. The embassy only legalizes documents that carry the U.S. Department of State authentication.

✕ Payment

Paying by personal check

The embassy takes money orders or cashier's checks payable to the Embassy of the Republic of Kenya. Anything else holds up the file.

✕ Return

An untracked return envelope

Envelopes with metered stamps or regular mail postage aren't accepted. The return has to go by FedEx, Express, Certified or Priority Mail with tracking.

✕ Paperwork

No copy or request letter

The embassy asks for one copy of the authenticated original and a letter stating what you need. Without them, the submission is incomplete.

Certified Kenya Translation

Some Kenya authorities require documents to be translated into English and Kiswahili before they can be accepted. We provide Certified Kenya Translations that are fully embassy-approved, ensuring your documents meet Kenya legal standards. Translations are accurate, professional, and accepted by government offices, schools, and businesses in the Kenya.

  • This service is amazing! I wish I had known about it sooner. I had a document to be used abroad that needed to be notarized AND needed an apostille. It’s not so hard to find a notary but for anything more complicated, Aziz can get it done with a minimum of effort on the client’s part. He picked up the document, handled the legalizations process and returned the document to me. And in less than 24 hours! The consulate, which was my only other option had a ridiculous wait time to even get an appointment,  not to mention they were going to charge me three times what Aziz did. His rates are reasonable and he is super-professional and efficient! He saved me so much time and navigated the whole process seamlessly for me.  I highly recommend him and will no doubt be calling on him again in the future.

  • I was impressed with this company from start to finish, and I will definitely go to them again when I need a notary.First, it was super easy to set up the three appointments that I needed; the receptionist was able to confirm the appointments while I was on the phone with her.  Second, the notary showed up right on time for all appointments, even in one city location during rush hour and where finding street parking was challenging.  Even when I needed to change the location of one appointment at the last minute (from a Starbucks that wasn't open yet to a nearby restaurant), it was easy to reach the notary himself and work out the change with him.  Third, the two notaries I dealt with were both professional in appearance and manner.  Finally, company can cover DC, MD, and VA where I do business, and their price is reasonable.I'm very grateful that the paperwork went smoothly and was done properly.  I'm a new fan of DC Mobile Notary.

  • Aziz of DC MOBILE Notary was incredibly patient, knowledgeable, friendly, and reliable with regard to services we needed to authenticate educational documents for use abroad.  I will no hesitate to utilize his services again. In today's world of everything automated and voice bots, Aziz was a breath of fresh air, answers calls and emails without delays and works on finding solutions for his clients. Thanks Aziz.

What Is Kenya Embassy Legalization (Attestation)?

Kenya is not part of the Hague Apostille Convention, so a U.S. apostille alone isn't enough. Your document is authenticated by the Secretary of State and the U.S. Department of State, then legalized by the Embassy of Kenya in Washington, DC. We handle every step and the embassy payment for you.

Answers

Kenya legalization, answered

Does Kenya accept a U.S. apostille?

No. Kenya isn't a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so U.S. documents need full legalization: Secretary of State, U.S. Department of State, then the Embassy of Kenya in Washington, DC.

How much does the Embassy of Kenya charge?

The Embassy of Kenya charges $50 per document, paid by money order or cashier's check. Our service starts at $495 per document, and we include all government fees in your quote.

Which documents can be legalized for Kenya?

Personal documents such as birth and marriage certificates, diplomas, transcripts and FBI background checks, and business documents such as certificates of incorporation, good standing certificates and powers of attorney.

Do my documents need to be translated for Kenya?

Usually not. English is an official language of Kenya, so U.S. documents in English go to the embassy as they are. Documents in another language need a certified English translation first.

Can I send my documents by mail?

Yes. Mail or ship the original to our Washington, DC office, or we pick it up in DC, Northern Virginia or Maryland. We send it back by tracked courier when it's done.

Requirements checked against the Embassy of Kenya in Washington, DC and the HCCH Apostille Convention status table, November 2026.
